Loading and unloading; tipping-apparatus.-In mechanism for handling and unloading railway cars, more particularly for use in mines, the cars are hauled up an incline by endless cables and are tipped and traversed to an upper return track by a pivoted structure. Fig. 1 shows mechanism for hauling the cars from the pit mouth to the upper part of a structure A, into which the cars are tipped, the coal being afterwards screened and distributed to wagons a. The cars are hauled up the incline by means of endless chains or cables c1 connected by cross-bars c6 carrying wheels c7 running on auxiliary side tracks c2, Fig. 6. At the upper end of the incline, the cars are drawn on to a steeper portion of the track e1 forming part of a pivoted structure D, the increased inclination causing the coal to be tipped. The guide-wheels c' then engage underneath girders e', causing the structure D to revolve, until the track e1 registers with the upper return rails. The bars c6 then prevent the cars from running down at excessive speed. The cars are fed on and off the tracks by travelling belts b1, b2, the length of which is equal to the distance between two of the cross-bars c6. In a modification shown in Fig. 4, the structure D is replaced by a single pivoted beam D', balanced by a counterweight D2, The beam is raised as before by the actions of the rollers c' on the underside of a rail d2, and the beam is retained in the raised position by an automatic catch d3. This is released when the cars run down the upper track, by knocking over the lever d4. At the lower end of this track, a portion of the rail is hinged, as shown in Fig. 8, in order to allow the cross-bars c6 to pass through the track. As the car approaches, the bar c6 engages and lifts a bent arm c12, causing a portion of the track to be turned about the pivot c'‹. The pivoted portion of the track is replaced by the bar c6 engaging a downward extension c13 of the arm c12.
