Feeding sheets.-Apparatus for feeding bands, labels, and wrappers, to packing and like machines comprises a receptacle 1 for the bands &c. having a movable bottom 2, which is gradually elevated by a screw 3 rotated by ratchet gearing 6. The ratchet gear is arranged so that the operative stroke of the pawl is made by a spring and the return stroke by a cam, so that the feed ceases should the top of the pile be high enough. The bottom 2 is integral with a bracket 21, which carries a pivoted halfnut 4 capable of being turned into or out of engagement with the screw 3 by an eccentric guide-rod 14 turned by a handle 15. The receptacle 1 may be provided with hinged sides to facilitate discharging and with inwardly - projecting pins 27 for holding the top of the pile. The top label is taken by a device 11 which receives a supply of adhesive from a roller 23 rotating in a trough 24, removes a label, and then applies it to a package in the trough 38. The device 11 is carried by a sleeve on a shaft 19 carried by a lever 62 on a shaft 61. The device 11 is raised and lowered to contact with the roller 23, or to take a label, by a link 22 connected to a lever 21 oscillated by a cam. The device 11 is made of a similar shape but smaller than the sheets to be fed, and if the adhesive is to be only applied in parts, the face 25 may be recessed. In the recesses are located fingers 26 carried by a bridge-piece 264 pivoted on the shaft 19 and actuated by a link 65 from a cam-operated lever 66. These fingers are actuated so as to be withdrawn below the surface of the separator 11 when this latter is in contact with the gumming-roller, and are then moved to detach the label when the device 11 comes in contact with the package.
