Reaping and mowing machines.-A machine for cutting grass, grain, &c. is provided with two cutter-bars reciprocated in contact with one another by means of eccentrics, and with a combined separator and deflector for separating the cut grain from the uncut crop, and for moving it out of the way of the knives on the next round. The cutting-apparatus is mounted on a swinging frame 20 comprising shoes 23, 24 and upper and lower toothed members 21, between which the knife-bars 26, 27 are reciprocated bv connecting-rods 29, 30, and eccentrics 31, 32. A flange 28 on the knife-bar 27 forms a guide for the knife-bar 26. The eccentrics are mounted on a shaft 16 driven from the axle of the wheels 11 by bevel and chain gearing 13, 14, 18, 19. They are arranged so as to cause the knives to operate towards one another. The combined separator and deflector consists of a curved and inclined plate 25, an inclined diverging plate 25a, and a curved plate 25b.
