An Improved Automatic Guide Box for Iron and Steel Rolling Mills.

Rolling.-The jaws of a guide-box for a rolling-mill are closed on to the bar to centre it by wedge mechanism operated by the front of the bar in its passage through the box. The box carries a fixed adjustable jaw 14 and a wedge-operated jaw 15, and is guided by lugs 9 on bolts 6 and by guides 5. A lever 35 is lifted by the front of the bar, and this lever through toggle mechanism operates the wedge 42 and releases a catch 26 and so allows the box to move forward against the action of a weight, a spring 39 returning the lever to its initial position. An intermediate support 23 guides the end of the bar at its insertion but falls out of action as the box moves forward. When it is desired to suspend the action of the wedge, the lever 46 is lifted and so removes the key which fixes the lever 35 to its shaft. Converging guide-plates 10, 11, 12 are provided, the upper one 11 being capable of being swung out of action.
