[Cognate Application, 25,851/11.] Lift valves; hinged valves; actuating.-To prevent suction on the false bottom of a mash tun, the discharge pipe is fitted with an adjustable valve which is opened by the pressure of the wort, and closes when the pressure falls. The adjustment may be automatic and arranged so that the pressure required to open the valve varies with the level of the wort in the tun. The valve 4, Fig. 1, is carried by a stem 5, acted upon by a spring 9 to raise it but pressed down by a lever 7 and an adjustable counterweight 8. The valve may be held down by an adjustable spring, and may be in the form of a pivoted flap. The counterweight may be replaced by a casing 27, Fig. 4, adapted to be moved by clock-work along the counterweight lever. The flow of wort may control the movements of the counterweight, by a hanging piece 40 carrying a pin 41, which contacts with the fly 32 when the lever 33 is horizontal but is free of the fly when the lever is inclined, owing to the closing of the valve. In place of the hanging piece 40, a pivoted tube containing mercury may be used to start and stop the clock-work. The counterweight may be replaced by a vessel containing liquid which is allowed to flow out slowly The exit orifice may be controlled by a hanging piece so that the liquid flows out only when the lever is inclined.
