Testing physical qualities of materials. - An hydraulic testing-apparatus for transverse, tensile, and compressive tests comprises a fixed piston-head a formed integrally with a hollow piston d and supported by vertical standards b upon a hollow base c. The piston is surrounded by a verticallymovable inverted cylinder e connected by links g to a stress-bar h carrying adjustable pairs of knifeedges i. The upper knife-edge is carried by a cross-bar k detachably fastened to the piston head a. For textile tests, jaws l are attached to the base c and stress-bar h respectively. In the operation of the apparatus, liquid is forced by a pump from the receptable formed by the hollow base c and conveyed into the cylinder by a pipe m, the resulting stress applied to the test-piece being ascertained by means of the gauges n, one of which is used during compressive or tensile tests, and the other for transverse tests.
