24,177. Howard, G. H. Oct. 23. Buoys.-A buoy A for conveying the crew of a sunken submarine or other vessel to the surface is mounted in a water-tight refuge chamber Q provided with water-tight doors U and valves T for flooding. The buoy is held on its seat by means of a screw L; and a bolt Q is arranged so that it is shot across the socket by a spring P when the screw is partly unscrewed in order that the buoy may be forced out of its chamber by again screwing the screw L down. Funnels C, D are provided through which the crew escape on the buoy reaching the surface. The buoy is provided with compressed-air chambers B, electric lights V, lockers G for food, clothing, and dry cells, bells J for signalling to and from the deck, and a handrail H which telescopes into it. A similar buoy is used for carrying an insulated wire to the surface for communicating between the surface and a sunken ship. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 20,065/05, [Class 113, Ships &c., Div. I.], 16,705/11, 21,906/11, and 24,165/11.
