28,591. Meadows, J. W. Dec. 11. No Patent granted (Sealing fec not paid). Coins, testing.-False coins are detected by passing them through an apparatus in which they are pressed against a wick moistened with a liquid adapted to detect base metal by marking them. The coins are inserted in an upper aperture whence they fall between two plates g, h and rest on spring-pressed pivoted gates m, m1. A handle n is then operated to turn an arm n2 which carries a cross-piece n3. The cross-piece is moved down a slot n4 and presses the gates m, m1 down against the springs. At the same time a light spring n5 passes behind the coin to press it forward into engagement with a moistened wick k which passes through holes in plates g, h from a vessel i, being enclosed in a vulcanite tube. The coin rests, in contact with the wick, on two forwardly-projected spring-pressed plates o, o1 which retain the coin until one of the push-pins c2, c3 is pressed, whereupon the coin passes through one of the outlets c, c1. An inspection window e, and a corresponding window h1 in the plate h may be provided.
