Cramps; holding-tools.-Relates to spring- manipulating devices of the type in which a spring is compressed and retained in a clip to facilitate handling and assembling on the valve spindle or other part of an engine. The compression device comprises a split cylindrical member d having sufficient material left at h to connect the split portions together and provided at one end with a pivoted cross-piece or abutment e and at the other end with a cam-lever f. The clip a consists of a sheet-metal blank bent to cylindrical form and divided longitudinally so that it can be opened, by manipulating the ends b, b1, to place it on the compressed spring, the ends of the spring being engaged by the flanged ends c, c' of the clip. The pressure of the cam-lever may then be released and the cross-piece e turned to lie wholly within the split in the member d for removal of the clip and enclosed spring.
