24,451. Symmonds, T. Oct. 28. Current motors.-The motor comprises a hollow revoluble drum provided with paddles which are withdrawn into the interior of the drum when not in operation. The drum 4 is revolubly mounted upon a stationary vertical shaft 7, and is placed in a masonry casing 1 situated at the side of or in the middle of a stream. When the motor is not in operation, a gate 2 can be lowered. The drum contains a number of paddles 13 to be projected from or withdrawn into the drum by compressed-air servo-motors 22. The compressed air is taken from a common supply pipe 24 communicating with a reservoir 23. Air is compressed and forced into the reservoir by a pump 27 driven off a standing bevel-wheel 32 through suitable mechanism. The valves 26 of the servo-motors 22 are operated periodically by cams 54, so that as each paddle approaches the open side of the casing 1, it is projected into the stream and is afterwards withdrawn. The cam 54 can be raised out of action when required by hand-wheels 59. The upper part of the drum is provided with gearing 37, meshing with a pinion 36, connected by suitable gearing with the horizontal power shaft 40. The drum, cams, and pinion 36 are all capable of limited vertical movement with the rise and fall of the stream. Means are provided for rendering the openings through which the paddles project water-tight during working, and additional means are provided for use when repairs to the interior of the drum are in progress. Regulating.-To stop the motor, a band brake 42 is provided.
