2108. Chapman, H. W. Jan. 27. Strainers.-The rake b, Fig. 1, for clearing the straining-grid 4 of a sewer, -watercourse, &c. is reciprocated by means of a chain or rope l at each side ; the chains &c. pass over fixed sprocket wheels or pulleys m and under movable wheels &c. o, and are secured to the frame n at their free ends p. The movable wheels o carry balance weights q and are secured to endless side chains t by a rod s; the side chains are rotated from the power shaft j around sprocket-wheels u, u1. Each side guide a1 for the rake b is turned round a pivot a2 into the position shown in Fig. 5, so that the rake, when moving downwards, is clear of the grid. This is effected from the driving-shaft by means of a rotating cam i, levers h, d, and a weighted rod f. During the upward movement of the rake, it is pressed yieldingly against the grid by means of the weighted parts or by springs. Solid matter is scraped off the rake by means of a plate wand is delivered by a hinged deflecting-board x into a shoot &c. The board x is held clear of the rake in its upward movement, but when the rake comes into contact with the plate w, the board is allowed to fall slightly to catch the solids by the movements of levers z, 1, 3.
