8054. Marrs, V. B., and Blakey, W. H. March 30. Alarms, high and low water.-An indicator or alarm comprises a casing connected with a steamboiler and provided with four whistles or other audible signals which indicate respectively when the water-level is too low, when it has been restored to normal, and when the steam pressure is too low or too high. As shown, the apparatus comprises a casing divided into three parts 4, 5, -6, the middle one of which connects by pipes with steam and water spaces of the boiler and contains a weighted float 13, which operates a valve 9 so that, when the level falls, steam passes through the valve and a nipple 8 into the upper compartment, wherein it raises a spring-pressed piston 17. Through the upper chamber 4, a pipe 19 passes, furnished with an apertured disk 22 at its inner end and leading to a whistle 20 at its outer end. Sectorial disks 25, 26, Fig. 4, are pivoted on the disk 22 and formed with apertures 29, 30 and spring dogs 37, 38. The piston 17 carries a rod 32, Fig. 5, which supports a yoke with unequal arms carrying pins 36; on the rising of the piston, these pins engage the dogs 37, 38 and swing the apertures 29, 30 into line with the pipe 19, allowing the whistle to sound. As water is pumped into the boiler to restore the level, the valve 9 is gradually closed, leaving a body of steam in the upper compartment. A valve 40 in this compartment, leading to a whistle 44, is opened on the rising-of the water-level to normal, by link-work connected to the link-work which connects the valve 9 and the float 13. In the lower compartment 6, which is connected to the steam space, similar sectorial valves 55 are operated from a similar piston 17 as it moves in opposite directions, so that one or other whistle 48 is sounded according as the pressure rises or falls unduly.
