Means are provided for preventing damage to the matrices in partly empty magazine channels due to their sliding down to the magazine entrance during the removal of the magazine from the rear of the machine. The magazine is provided with one or more transverse slidiug bars 11 having grooves which normally register with the magazine channels. During the removal of the magazine, the bars are moved endways by the engagement of their inclined ends with a cam-face 15 on the machine frame. The grooves in the bars 11 are thereby moved out of register with the magazine channels, and matrices are prevented from passing the bars. When a magazine is replaced on the machine, the bars 11 are moved back to normal position by a second cam-face 18.
