Assembling and alining matrices. - Relates to means for holding matrices or type dies or matrix or typeb ars in their adjusted position for change of character or face before the composed line is alined ; means are also provided for releasing them after the composed line has done its work. Fig. 1 shows a matrix-bar in two parts, the upper part 5 being supported by a wire 3 and carrying a movable part 1. A series of notches 8, equal in number to the characters 4, engage a pawl 10 controlled by a spring 9, according to the position of the part 1. A pawl and spring may co-operate with each matrix or the separate spring or springs may be dispensed with, one or more resilient detents being provided. Fig. 6 shows an arrangement for matrices 16 having no room for the notches 8. The means for releasing the composed line comprises a rotatable cam-rod 13, which may be turned, during or after alinement, by the member 7.
