741. National Cash Register Co., Banwell, H. C., Phillips, F., and Fletcher, A. S. Jan. 16. [Cognate Applications, 5108/15 and 7093/15.] Checking and recording receipts.-Relates to receptacles for receiving record-slips in check tills, cash registers, &c., such as are described in Specifications 9381/14 and 13,269/14, of the type in which the receiving-slot is automatically closed when the receptacle is removed from the machine, and consists in providing the receptacles with a lock, bolt, or the equivalent for securing the receptacle in position, with means operated by the lock for opening and closing the shutter for the receiving-slot, and with means for locking the shutter. In one form. the shutter 2, Fig. 3, is pivoted at 2a, and bars 3, 4 are connected to it on each side of the pivot by a vertical slot 5 and pin 6 and by an horizontal slot 7 and pin 8. Before placing the receptacles in position, the lid 13 is closed and secured by a lock 9, the bar :1 being slightly depressed against the action of a spring 14. The receptacle is then introduced into the machine, and the bolt 12 of a lock 12a is shot to secure it in place by any appropriate means, an inclined projection 19 on the bolt acting to depress the bar 3 still farther. A projection 16 on the bar is thus caused to remove a catch 17 from engagement with the shutter, which is lifted to open the slot 1a, and a spring plunger 3" passes to the right of the pin 6. In rising, the shutter lifts the bar 4 till its upper end lies in front of an inclined projection 18 on the bolt 12. When the bolt 12 is operated to free the receptacle, the projection 18 depresses the bar 4 to close the shutter, preferably with the aid of a spring 2b, the pin 6 acting on the plunger 3a to move the bar 3 laterally, so that the extension 16 frees the catch 17 and allows it to lock the shutter. According to the Provisional Specification 741/15, the bars 3, 4, are connected by a spring, and one of them forces the other to engage a stop when the lock is operated for the removal of the receptacle; or one bar only may be used. In another form, when the lid is closed, a projection 31, Fig. 9, acts on a lever 27 pivoted so that it may rock in two planes at rightangles to each other to remove it from engagement with a notch or one of a series of notches 30 in the shutter. Then, when the bolt 25 is operated to secure the receptacle in position, a projection 24 on the bolt engaging a camslot in a boss 22 operates a lever 21 to raise the shutter 2. As the shutter rises, a projection 32 engages a projection 33 on the lever 27, which is thus rocked so that its end 29a clears the projection 31, and the spring 34 moves the lever into position for its end to re-engage the shutter when this is closed by the releasing of the bolt 25. In another form, a sliding shutter 34, Fig. 14, is connected to an arm of a lever 35 mounted on a spindle 36, the other arm of the lever being adapted to engage ratchet teeth 41 on the arm 42 of a bell-crank lever, which may be retained in either of two positions of a detent 47. The spindle 36 is also provided with an arm connected to the bolt which secures the receptacle in position. When the lid 51 is closed, a nose 50 on its lock bolt 48 moves the bell-crank lever to free the shutter - operating lever. Securing the receptacle in position rocks the spindle 36, thus operating the lever 35, so that one arm withdraws the shutter from the slot while the other arm engages one of the ratchet teeth 41 and moves the bell-crank lever 42 which has been released by the locking of the lid 51. When the receptacle is released, the spindle 36 is rocked, and one arm of the lever 35 returns the shutter, while the other rides over the ratchet teeth.
