14,709. Lacy, B. S. Oct. 18. Carbon tetrachloride and chloroform are obtained by mixing chlorine with a large excess of methylenechloride vapour, causing . the mixture to react, cooling the reaction product, adding a further quantity of chlorine, and repeating the operations until the required amount of reaction product is obtained. With the apparatus shown, a mixture of, say, one volume of chlorine and six volumes of methylenechloride vapour is passed by the pipe 14 into the reaction vessel 1, the temperature of which'is maintained at 300-400‹ C. ; the reaction products pass to a cooler 8, where they are cooled to about 200‹ C., and thence to a pipe 15, where thev are mixed with a second volume of chlorine and pass to a second reaction vessel 2, and so through the reaction vessels 3 .. 6, and coolers 9 .. 12, chlorine being supplied to the pipes 16 .. 19; the products finally pass through a reaction vessel 7 and cooler 20 to a water-absorption vessel 21. The reaction may be effected by exposure to light or electric discharges instead of by heating.
