Silicon.-In a process for extracting aluminium from materials containing aluminium and silicon, such as clay, bauxite, &c., comprising the treatment of the material with chlorine to form aluminium chloride and silicon tetrachloride, separating the chlorides, and treating them to obtain aluminium and silicon, the silicon tetrachloride; obtained in a condenser 35 is collected in a vessel 57 and fed to a bath of molten aluminium, or in some cases, molten zinc, in a furnace 73, whereby aluminium chloride is formed, which is passed to the condenser 34 or 2, while the silicon that is liberated is withdrawn through the spout 127.
