Controlling variable-speed gearing.-A device for controlling variable-speed and reversing gearing for motor-vehicles and machine tools, comprising a hollow shaft D which moves axially to select and rotates to operate one of the gear-changing rods G, is actuated by a hand-lever A having a ball joint A1 and a second ball A2 engaging a cup D1 on the shaft D. The parts are enclosed in a casing C which is rendered dust and oil tight by a sliding cap A7 and packing A8. A spring- pressed stop E1 projects radially into the cup D1 and engages a fixed arc-shaped abutment C5, which prevents the shaft D from moving to the right to throw in the reversing-gear until the stop is depressed by means of a rod A3 passing through the lever A. In a modification, one of the rods G controls both a forward and a reverse gear, and a projection is provided to prevent the stop E' from rotating in one direction to operate the reverse gear until depressed Ly the rod A3.
