To apply the brake, the free ends 16, 17 of the band are pressed against the drum 3 as by a member 13, whereupon the drum, according to its direction of rotation, brings one or other of these ends against the fixed stop 11 and effects the complete application of the band. The member 13 has rollers 14, 15 for contacting with the ends of the band and is carried by an eccentric pin 18 by which it can be moved towards or away from the band by a lever 21 fixed on the spindle 19.
