Wire ropes and cords; flat and flat-sided ropes and cords.-Relates to cables intended for towing submarine weapons of offence and defence, and consists in making them by stranding three wires together or about a central wire or core, stranding three such strands to form a compound strand, and repeating this process until the cable has the required thickness. In a modification, three wires are stranded about a central wire or core, and a number of such strands are built up into a cable of triangular formation bound with one or more layers of wire. It is admitted that towing-cables have previously been built up of one or more cores of wire rope or stranded hemp laid alongside each other with or without filling pieces of wood and covered with metal sheet or wires forming a cable having an exterior triangular shape.
