Tempering.-Consists (1) in tempering the bodies of projectiles while the noses are immersed in a liquid cooling medium, and (2) in apparatus for performing the process. In the apparatus shown, the projectiles 20 are supported in rotary sockets carried by a rotary table 8 in a bath 2, which is mounted on a truck 3. The sockets are caused to rotate, while the table rotates, by spur wheels 21 in gear with a fixed spur wheel 22; and the table is rotated by a spur gear 9, 10 and worm gear 12, the spindle 13 of the worm being driven by a flexible or telescopic shaft adapted to fit a socket 15 on the spindle. Water or oil is fed to the bath at the desired rate by a pipe, and flows out by an overflow pipe, the height of which determines the level of the liquid of the bath. The depth of immersion of the nose of the projectile can also be regulated by raising or lowering the table 8 by screws 4. The truck is carried on rails within a furnace comprising three chambers, in the first two of which the heating is effected, and in the third the cooling.
