Vaporizers, external.-Part of the heavy fuel and air supplied through the carburettor is electrically ignited and burnt in a separate chamber, and the heated gases thus formed pass through a common throttle with the rest of the mixture into a mixing- chamber. The fuel and air pass downwards from the carburettor through a chamber 1; any fuel remaining liquid is drawn through a grating 10 into the combustion chamber 14, where it strikes a deflector 13 and, after being burnt, passes up a tube 15 to the mixing-chamber 9. Air or mixture is also drawn into the combustion chamber by means of a passage 53 having an adjustable opening into the chamber 1. Ignition is effected in the chamber 14 by a sparking-device 24. The underside of the deflector 13 is covered with refractory material 49. A throttle 8 fits over the tube 15 and the mixture passage 6, and has notches 32, forming ports, which can be closed bv sliding blocks 30, 301. The block 301, controlling the supply from the passage 6 when the throttle is closed, is operated by hand; the block 30, controlling the supply of heated gases, may also be operated by hand, but is preferably actuated by a thermostat. When the apparatus is cold, a spring 35 withdraws the block 30, so opening the port 32. As the apparatus becomes heated, the thermostat 41 expands and forces the block 30 inwards, tending to close the port 32. The thermostat is contained in a chamber heated bv gases passing from the tube 15. For starting, lighter fuel is supplied from a tank c to a receptacle 18, from which it flows through the grating 10 into the combustion chamber. The lower part of the combustion chamber is covered by a casing 77 through which air passes to a pipe 79 and the main air inlet 2. A small amount of air is admitted direct to the combustion chamber through a hole 74.
