Actuated or applied by speed regulators; band; electric and magnetic.-Expanding band clutches and brakes are operated by weights bearing against the joints of toggle levers pivoted to the band ends, or the bands may be continuous and be operated by a toggle like action produced by weights secured to inwardly bent sections of the bands. The bands C. Fig. 1, are arranged between a flange B on a driving boss b1 and the outer driven drum A and are operated centrifugally by weights E connected to the band-ends by toggle-links D. Studs F may be adjusted in the weights E and locked by bolts f1 and are adjustably secured by nuts f3, f4 in a spring ring G1 which tends to disengage the clutch. The disengaging-ring G1 may he replaced by a rigid ring between which and the studs F are arranged adjustable springs. The centrifugal effect may be increased by the use of weights M secured to the bands. The bands are driven by surfaces b5, b7 on the flange B, which surfaces may be inclined so as to force the band ends against the drum. One band only and a single set of operating-gear may be provided. In the form shown in Fig. 10, the band C is continuous but is bent around weights E1, which are connected to the spring G1, and, if desired, to additional weights and are covered with asbestos fabric &c. to form part of the clutching-surface. The driving-flange B is shaped to fit the band. Under centrifugal action the bent portions of the band are straightened out and act on the remainder of the bands with a boggle-like action. Instead of a spring, manual means, such as a toggle device, may be used to restrain the 'centrifugal action of the weights, or, as shown in Fig. 15, a stationary electro-magnetic coil Q may be excited to act on armatures c6 carried by the bands C and retain the bands normally against the flange B and a ring b10 secured thereto
