Operating doors by chain and cord arrangements, weights, link mechanism, toothed gearing, and electrically. - Doors and like closures for aircraft hangars and similar buildings are opened by causing the bottom edge to slide out at right-angles to the opening, and the upper edge to travel downwards so that the door lies flat when fully opened. The opening and closing may be effected by hauling on cables, or by a motor-driven pinion mounted on the door and engaging a fixed rack. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the door AD is guided by rollers R, S which travel along rails IIII, VV. At each side of the door are cables 4, 5; the lower cable 4 is attached to the door near the lower edge, and the upper cable 5 to a point C below the top edge of the door. Both cables are connected at the junction 7 to a single cable 8 which passes to a winch. In another form, in which the vertical guide paths may be omitted, the door is provided with two or more radius links or struts pivoted at their lower ends to fixed brackets, and at their upper ends to the middle of the door. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the guide paths are carried in the vertical plane and the door is counterbalanced so that it is in equilibrium in all positions; the line G1, G2 shows successive positions of the mass centre of the door, and the lines H, V those of the centres of the rollers R, S. The cables 4 are each fixed at one end 21 and pass under and over pulleys 17, 16, thence around a driving-pulley 15, and a pulley 14 on the lower edge of the door, and are secured at the other end to a a fixed point 22. The driving-pulleys may be driven together by an endless belt 18 or otherwise, and the cables ma.y be arranged to give any desired ratio between the counter-weights and the pull on the cable. Fig. 4 shows the rach-and-pinion thrusting mechanism for operating the door and comprising an electric motor 25, a pinion 23, and a rack 24 fixed parallel to the bottom guide rail. Other counterbalance weights may be rigidly connected to the door so that they tend to tilt it from its lowest position. The lower guide rails may be placed one on each side of the entrance, or there may be a series of them for a wide door.
