Heating by electricity.-In a cooking or like heating apparatus in which a vessel forms part of the secondary of a transformer, an armature or keeper is actuated to complete the magnetic circuit by the movement of the vessel when this is placed in position. As shown in Fig. 2, a wedge-shaped armature a, on which the vessel is placed, is pivotally mounted on a spring c and engages with the shaped poles c of the magnet f. A saddle on the vessel engages with the armature and, with the vessel, forms the secondary. In a modification, Fig. 7, the armature a is mounted on a frame p adapted to receive the vessel and to slide in guides l to bring the armature into engagement with the poles e. The secondary may consist of one half-turn or one or more turns armoured or otherwise protected, and adapted to slide on the armature, and also provided with terminals to engage with contacts on the vessel. The armature is covered with heat-insulating and non-magnetic material with a non-radiating and non-absorbing surface. The part of the metal lid between the poles of the magnet is removed and replaced by a metal plate or trough insulated from the lid.
