Feeding carding-engines &c.-In an automatic feeding-machine the lifting lattice a, Fig. 2, is arranged nearly vertically and the movable back b is hinged at a point b1 some distance awav from the lower end of the lattice. The back b is moved forwards by weights d sliding on guides d', and as the back moves forwards certain of the weights are removed by projections i on them engaging fixed stops i@4. The weights are attached by cords b3 to projecting bars b2 which slide over the curved' tops c' of the sides of the hopper. The back is held during filling by pivoted spring catches e engaging the bars b2. The catches e carry projecting arms e5, the ends of which lie in the path of catches f1 on the weights d. In the filling position the catch f1 lies just below the arm e5, but if the back is pulled further out the catch rises above the arm, so that on releasing the back, the arm e5 is engaged and depresses the catch e and allows the back b to move continuously forward. Other forms of catches operating in this manner may be employed. A portion of the back may be hinged to turn outwards and downwards to facilitate emptying the hopper.
