Valve gear.-In an engine supplied with liquid fuel under high pressure, the fuel system being maintained under a steady pressure, a compressed-air inlet valve 15 for starting is actuated by the pressure of the fuel supply acting upon a column of liquid fuel. The valve 15, which admits compressed air to the cylinder 10 from a pipe 14, is normally closed by a spring 16 and is opened by means of a hydraulic piston 17 on the admission of fuel to a pipe 19 by a piston valve 23. The fuel is admitted from the highpressure fuel-supply system to the valve 19 by a pipe 21 and is exhxausted by a pipe 22. The valve 19 is actuated by a cam 25 on an enginedriven shaft 26, the cam acting upon a lever 24 provided with an adjustable fulcrum 27 to enable it to be put into and out of action.
