Medicines for internal use.-Solutions of any glandular substances for medical purposes are prepared from fresh glands, freed from fat or other adhering tissue, by mincing and completely liquefying by artificial gastric digestion. The solution is filtered, flavoured, treated with a preservative such as glycerine, diluted, and standardized. In an example pituitary gland is treated with water containing pepsin and hydrochloric acid and is kept at a temperature of 45‹ C for twelve hours in the presence of chloroform vapour. The liquid so produced is filtered. The solid matter remaining is triturated with glycerine, water and glycerine are added and the resultant liquid is filtered and added to the first filtrate. Small quantities of chloroform and oil of cinnamon are added and the liquid bottled for use. Specifications 9576/96 and 24891/97 are referred to.
