189,799. Erban, R. Nov. 30, 1921, [Convention date]. Friction gearing.-In epicyclic or other friction gearing employing planetary or idler balls or rollers, pressure between the working parts varying with the load is produced by transmitting the power through means such as cam surfaces and balls producing an axial reaction. In the form shown in Fig. 1, planetary balls 3 engaging studs 9 on the driven sleeve 13 engage a ring 2 secured in the casing 11 and a driving-sleeve 1 loose on the driving-shaft 12. Balls 4, 6 engage symmetrical or unsymmetrical inclines x on the sleeve 1, on a loose sleeve 5, and on a sleeve 7 splined on the shaft 12 and supported bv a thrust bearing 10. The arrangement of the balls and sleeves is such as to allow a cardan-like adjustment of the pressure of the balls on the sleeve 1. A spring 14 produces initial frictional engagement of the gearing parts. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, two sets of balls 3, 3' driving one or two sleeves 13 engage a spherical outer ring 2, or two rings with spherical outer bearing- surfaces, and two inner sleeves 1, 11, which are pressed apart by incline and ball devices 4, 41 and by springs 14, 141. The sleeves 1, 11 may be pressed towards each other to engage a single set of balls or rollers. The sleeve 13 may be stationary, the drive being transmitted between the parts 11, 12.
