Filters with loose filtering-materials.-Charcoal or other carbonaceous medium for filtering sugar or other liquors is revivified in the filter chambers by passing through the chambers superheated steam at a temperature of 600‹ F. or above. The medium may afterwards be cooled by introducing low pressure saturated steam, which is thus superheated and may be used in revivifying the medium of another filter. Air may be introduced with the superheated steam so as to decarbonize the medium. Or air may be used to cool the medium after the treatment with superheated steam. Before the revivifying treatment saturated or superheated steam, with or without water, may be passed through the medium to recover sugar in solution therefrom. The temperature of the combined steam and water used for this purpose is preferably between 200 and 220‹ F. The filters may be lined with fire-brick or other non-conducting material and may be lagged outside.
