A mixture of aromatic hydrocarbons is obtained by passing acetylene or gases containing acetylene through tubes containing pieces, preferably rings, of electrode carbon which are heated by the passage of an electric current. The ingoing acetylene may be heated at the expense of the heat of the outgoing products. The gas may be circulated continuously through the tubes and the products, such as benzene and toluene, separated by absorption or cooling. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also the use of any finely-divided material instead of electrode carbon and mentions ordinary or activated charcoal, glass, porcelain, quartz, silica, coal and non-catalytic metals. Methane is stated to be obtained by the decomposition of some of the acetylene; naphthalene is also mentioned as a reaction product. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
