221,249. Adam, M. A., Fieldhouse, J., and Baillie, R. May 8, 1923. Cleaning and pickling.-Loosely bundled materials such as tin scrap are enclosed in cylindrical perforated containers which are carried with a rolling motion through one or more vessels containing wheels with spokes between which the containers are carried, and a stripping treatment is applied in these or other vessels by means of a solution such as that described in Specification 154,635, [Class 41, Electrolysis], or by chlorine gas. The process may be combined with the electrolytic treatment of the tin solution by arranging a cathode under the spoked wheel, the material in the containers acting as anode. The containers a are fed to vessels e, f, g containing treating solution, water, and alkaline solution respectively, the liquor in the vessel e being circulated to and from an electrolytic apparatus. Additional vessels may be employed for de-decorating the scrap material if necessary. Alternatively a cathode z may be arranged under the spoked wheel d, Figs. 7 and 8, and its surface is swept by a rubber strip y carried by a cross piece x supported by pieces w upon the spokes of the wheel d. The deposited metal is thus swept into a cathode sump. In another modification, for the gaseous treatment, the spoked wheels are arranged in liquid seal chambers q, r, Figs. 5 and 6, which may contain carbon tetrachloride. The containers pass through a gas treatment chamber s with or without chambers v containing spoked wheels. The sealing may be effected by flap doors similar to those used in refrigerating plant, these being placed adjacent to the spoked wheels, and used instead of or in addition to a sealing liquid.
