221,524. Robinson & Co., Ltd., J., Garner, F., and Hall, A. March 13, 1923. Roller machines.- Apparatus for mixing, &c. rubber and the like comprises a, casing containing a rotatable member between which and the casing the rubber &c. is treated, the apparatus being so constructed that limited axial movement against a yielding resistance is permitted between the ends of the casing and the rotor, without the discharge of the material past the ends of the casing. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation, and Fig. 8, a plan of one form of the apparatus. A hollow cylindrical casing C2 is fitted with hollow end plates B2, B3 provided with means for circulating heating or cooling medium.. The end-plates carry guide-plates b14 with horizontal slides working in brackets J, and provided with bosses b16 against which bear adjustable springs S, so that rotation of the end plates is prevented, and axial movement permitted. In modifications, all the springs may be replaced by hydraulic rams, or by levers and weights. A shaft a20, a21 with thrust-bearing a25 and driven through a worm g' and worm-wheel a37, carries a rotor A2 which may be hollow and supplied with heating and cooling medium by a pipe a32 in the hollow shaft a21. The preferred form of rotor is shown in end and side view respectively in Figs. 10 and 12, and has tapered sides a14 sloping from the maximum width a10, a11 in both directions to an apex a13. At the apex, the rotor is cut away as at a18, to produce an edge which separates the material and forces it between the sides of the rotor and the ends of the casing. A hollow a16 may be formed in the broad part of the rotor, and this may be formed with a secondary apex. Grinding plates a17 may be let into the sides. The material to be treated is fed into the machine through the opening c15, which is preferably surmounted by a hopper having separate mouths and feeding devices for rubber and compounding ingredients, and an air vent. The treated material is removed by a door K, Fig. 8, operated by a hand-wheel k4 through worm gearing k3 and links k7, k8. In modifications, only one end plate is movable, or the end plates may be fixed, and the rotor capable of axial expansion and contraction.
