Purifying fats and fatty oils; essential oils and turpentine; extracting. -In refining substances or removing volatile ingredients the substances are subjected to successive treatments with steam or vapours under different pressures generated in the different effects of a multiple-effect evaporating-apparatus. As applied for deodorizing oil by treatment with steam, the oil is passed down a column divide'd into sections 1, 2, 3, separated by chambers containing heaters 10, 11. Each section contains perforated plates 4 .. 9, and is supplied with steam by pipes 13, 14, 15 from the effects 16, 17, 18 of a three-effect evaporator. The steam from section 1 passes by a pipe 19 to the heater 17a of effect 17, the steam from section 2 by a pipe 20 to the heater 18a of effect 18, and the steam from section 3 passes by a pipe 21 to a barometric condenser 22 which is exhausted by a pump or a steam ejector 23, the steam from which passes into the heater 16a of the effect 16. Alternatively, the condenser 22 may be exhausted by two ejectors 231, 2311 in series separated by a surface condenser 32 in which water for evaporation may be preheated. The condensed water from the heaters 16a-18a is passed through preheaters 26-28 for the feedwater or mav be passed through steam traps into the heater below. The treated oil from the base of the column is passed through a preheater 24 for the oil supply. For treating solid matter, such as for extracting turpentine from pinewood sawdust or oil from sandal wood, the column is replaced bv an apparatus which allows the solid's to fall from one plate to another. Rotary valves may be employed to separate the sections.
