240,652. Gaskell, H. Penn-. Oct. 11, 1924. Lawn-tennis practising and teaching appliances. -Apparatus for use in teaching or practising lawn tennis consists of a pedestal capable of variation in height and surmounted by a ballsupport, preferably of tubular rubber, possessing sufficient rigidity to maintain its erect attitude but capable of offering but little resistance to lateral movement when struck by the racket. As shown in Fig. 1, a telescopic pedestal b is surmounted bv an india-rubber tube c capable of readily yielding when struck by a racket in playing the ball a. In a modification, Fig. 2, the ball is supported on a hard rubber tube e extending upwardly from a bent arm d which is capable of rotating in the upper portion of the pedestal when the ball is struck. In a further modification, instead of employing the tube e, the ball is suspended from the arm d by means of a pair of resilient levers f, Fig. 3, connected to the arm bv cords h. In a further modification, Fig. 4, the ball is suspended by a cord sling f tightened by a rubber ring k.
