Apparatus for making filaments.-Apparatus for the dry spinning of artificial silk comprises a cylindrical spinning pipe at one or both ends of which there is fitted a transverse pipe closed at one or both ends bv a window. The upper transverse pipe may be fitted with a circular tubulure for the introduction of the spinning nozzle and for passage of the drying air. The piping employed is preferably of seamless steel and all connections may be made permanent and gas-tight by welding or soldering. In the form of apparatus shown, a is a cylindrical pipe from which the spun thread issues at h and to the upper and lower ends of which there are welded transverse pipes b1 and b2. One end of each transverse pipe is closed by a circular window c1, c2 hinged to the pipe and held in the closed position by a clamping screw g', g2 against a washer i', i2, which is pressed against the plane end surfaces k1, k2 of the pipe. The other end of each transverse pipe may be closed in a similar manner or mav be permanently closed and fitted into a suitable recess in the pipe. On the upper transverse pipe b1 there is a tubulure d for the passage of the drying air, and through which the spinning nozzle f is introduced. The mouth of the tubulure is closed by a plate held by suitable clamps e.
