321,469. Whitehouse, J. M. Aug. 14, 1928. Ratchet and like step-by-step conveyers.-In a convever for coal &c. wherein the material is conveyed along a trough by the reciprocation of a set of transverse wedges relatively to another set of similar wedges, the wedges of each set are capable of a rising and falling movement., and the wedges of each set ride upon those, of the other set alternately according to the direction of movement of the conveyer. The movable wedges 5, Fig. 1, are pivoted at 6 in longitudinally slidable bars 2 disposed adjacent to each side of the trough. The fixed wedges 4 are pivoted at 8 to the bottom of the trough. Accumulation of material under the wedges is prevented by forming recesses 10a on their underfaces and perforations 10 in the bottom of the trough. The passage of the sliding wedges under the fixed wedges is facilitated by providing the latter with ribs 9 having undercut edges. Similar ribs may be formed on the sliding blocks to facilitate their passage over the fixed blocks. The inclined faces of the wedges may be serrated or formed with steps. In a modification the wedges are not hinged. The thickened ends of the bars 2 slide in longitudinal slots 11, Fig. 5, formed in the trough sides and are bolted to the sides of a carriage 12 which extends beneath the trough and is slidable longitudinally of the conveyer upon two parallel spindles 13. A cradle 14 secured to the trough is pivotally mounted upon a part 14a of the reducing gear through which motion is imparted to the bars by a motor 15. A member 17 pivoted at 16 to the cradle 14 engages a central recess in the carriage 12 and is slotted to receive a block 19 mounted on the pin 20 of a crank driven by the reducing gear. In further modifications either the fixed or movable wedges may be formed as integral parts of the trough, and reciprocation may be imparted to both sets of wedges.
