Tunnel kilns.-An annular kiln for heating containers for solid materials such as coal or for chemical operations, comprises a travelling platform b on which containers n are carried, outlets o from the containers passing through openings f in the platform and being sealed in necks g. The containers travel successively through zones of increasing temperature, high temperature and decreasing temperature before being discharged. When a container has reached the unloading point a corresponding valve k is closed, the container lifted and inverted, the closing plate q removed, and the plate p and charge rammed out through doors r. The air for combustion of the heating gases is preheated by contact with the hot containers which are thereby cooled.
