Improvements in the purification of gases by washing with organic liquids

Materials for purifying.-Coke-oven gases, lowtemperature gases, cracking gases and gases other than the above-mentioned in Specification 329,688, such as gases intended for the manufacture of synthetic ammonia, methanol, &c., are freed from volatile sulphur compounds, particularly hydrogen sulphide and to a large extent carbon dioxide if present in appreciable amounts, by washing with high b.p. hydrocarbons or phenols or mixtures under at least 10 atmospheres pressure at such a temperature that the concentration of hydrogen sulphide amounts to less than 0.3 per cent by volume of the gas. The washing- agent may be regenerated by distillation, evacuation, blowing gases therethrough or oxidation of the hydrogen sulphide. The pressure is preferably released in stages. Aliphatic hydrocarbons of the nature of middle oils, aromatic hydrocarbons such as xylene, heavy benzol, &c., hydrogenated hydrocarbons such as deca- and tetrahydronaphthalene, &c., and also cresols may be employed.
