PICT:0370493/IV/1 PICT:0370493/IV/2 PICT:0370493/IV/3 PICT:0370493/IV/4 Dyeing or like machines for treating hanks of yarn comprise yarn carriers 1 in closely spaced relation driven in opposite directions to one another, receiving either a uniform alternate left-hand and right-hand rotation, or a unidirectional rotation of adjustable speed with periods of rest of optional rotation. The yarn carriers 1, each formed with four or more concave side surfaces meeting at acute angles, are attached to gear boxes 2, which are rendered vertically movable to allow the carriers to be raised out of the dyebath 5, by being mounted on hydraulically operated pistons 46 working in tubular pillars 3. The yarn hanks 4 are led at their lower ends over guide tubes 45, which are mounted on rods 47 suspended on a common support 48 and guided by rollers 49. The supports 48 are attached to sleeves 50 which slide on rods 51 by the operation of levers 53, 54, the lever 54 being provided with a stop 56 which meets a collar 55 when the piston 46 is partly raised, so that further motion of the piston 46 causes the guide tubes 45 to be moved towards the yarn carriers 1, facilitating removal of the hanks. The distance between the carriers 1 and guide tubes 45 may be adjusted by means of a rod 62 provided with a locking nose 61 engaging in one or other of a number of slots 63 in a fixed base 64, the rod 62 being articulated to a bolt 59 which slides in a slotted bracket 60, and against which a lever 58 mounted on a shaft 57, which also carries the lever 53, abuts when the gear-box 2 is in its lower position. The yarn carriers 1 are driven by means of an electric motor 6 mounted on a gear-box 7 and adapted to be run alternately in the left- and right-handed directions by means of a reversing device 8 controlled by a switch 9. The motor drives a shaft 67 through gear wheels 10, 11, a worm 12 being loosely mounted on this shaft and gear wheels 13, 14, 15 of different sizes being keyed thereon. The worm 12 when connected to the shaft 67 by a clutch 22 drives a cam disc 17 through a worm wheel 16, and a cam disc 21 through gearing 18, 19, 20. By means of the cams 17, 21, through the operation of levers 23, 24, friction clutches 25, 26 are temporarily engaged for periods dependent on the shapes of the cams. Two shafts 27, 28 extending in parallel relation underneath the gear-boxes 2 are thus set in motion at different speeds, the gear wheel 13 meshing with a small gear wheel 29 of the clutch 25, and the gear wheel 14 with a larger gear wheel 30 of the clutch 26. The clutch 22 is connected by means of links and rods 31, 32, 33 with a lever 34 which operates it, a clutch 35 being simultaneously operated. The clutch 35 connects a gear wheel 36 loosely mounted on the shaft 27 and mashing with the gear wheel 15, with the shaft 27 when the drive 25, 26 for the cams is disengaged, thus causing the yarn carriers 1, when the reversing device 8 is switched on, to rotate in alternate directions. The shafts 27, 28 are provided at each of the gear boxes 2 with worm wheels 37, 38 meshing with other worm wheels 39, 40 mounted loosely on a shaft 41 and selectively connected thereto by means of a clutch 43 operated by a handle 42. The drive of the shaft 41 is transmitted by intermeshing gear wheels 44 to the yarn carriers 1, so that each of the latter is rotated in the opposite direction to the two adjacent carriers.
