[Class 12 (iii).] The linear expansion due to heat of the exhaust pipe of an internal-combustion engine is used to actuate a valve or other device controlling an extra supply of lubricant to the cylinders. The Figure shows the device constituted by a rod 5 adjustably anchored at one end 8 to the exhaust pipe 1, and engaging at its other end a ball valve 3 mounted in a casing 4, also attached to the exhaust pipe. When the engine is cold, the rod 5 holds the valve 3 unseated, so that extra lubricant flows through pipes 4a, 4b to the cylinders. As the exhaust pipe expands due to heat, the rod 5 moves relatively to the valve casing, so that the valve is seated by a spring 7 and cuts off the lubricant. In a modification, the rod 5 is attached to one end of a lever pivoted on the exhaust pipe, the other end of the lever being connected to the control device.
