Process for the production of rubber and ebonite coatings with rough, shagreened, or the like surfaces

Articles particularly of metal, are coated with rubber exhibiting a rough, shagreened or like surface, by applying to the article, preferably roughened, a liquid rubber mix containing vulcanizing agents, and, if desired, accelerators, fillers, &c., in the form of fine drops, in such quantity that the drops cannot coalesce into a smooth layer, drying, and vulcanizing. The application may be made by spraying, the character of the surface being controlled by the size of the nozzle or by the spraying pressure. The layer may be applied directly to the article, or a layer of adhesive may be interposed. Ornamental effects may be obtained by the consecutive use of mixes of different colours. According to an example 100 parts of 60 per cent latex, 25 parts of sulphur, and 2 parts of vulcazit 576 are sprayed on to an etched brass sheet until the droplets just touch each other. After drying for two hours, the coating is vulcanized at 150 DEG C. Numerous articles are specified as suitable for coating in this manner, including optical and electrical apparatus, handles, wheels, &c. which require a non-corrosive surface and non-slip grip.
