[classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv).] Drawing, twisting, corrugating, axial-rolling, die-rolling.-In a machine for producing fluted, corrugated, twisted or tapered tubes, rods, bars, &c., a former a and a work-piece c are secured to a crosshead b reciprocated by a screw gear o. Flutes on the former a are engaged by balls f on a rotatable follower e geared to a rotatable die i. Balls j on the die engage the workpiece c to reproduce the pattern on the former. A clutch may be inserted between the crosshead and the former in order to stop rotation of the die at will. In a modification two formers may be used each controlling the rotation of separate coaxial dies for producing superimposed patterns on a single work-piece. In a further modification rollers on the die are used for twisting a flat-sided tube &c. To produce tapered tubes rotation of the follower by a fluted or tapered former causes a die to be expanded or contracted. Tubes &c. may be helically grooved and twisted together in rope form by engaging each tube in a separate die on a holder rotated by the former.
