387,705. Yarn and like winding-machines. WADE, H., 111, Hatton Garden, London.-(Universal Winding Co. ; 95, South Street, Boston, U.S.A.) Aug. 11, 1931, No. 22664. [Classes 120 (ii) and 120 (iii).] In a yarn or like winding machine having a winding- spindle 5, Fig. 3, pivoted to a support 6 so as to be swung out of operative position to facilitate doffing a cop-tube X therefrom and a latch 30 arranged to engage the coptube to retain it on the spindle, the latch 30 is arranged normally to be yieldingly engaged with an annular flange f on the cop-tube and to be moved automatically to release the coptube when the spindle is swung out of its operative position, as shown in Fig. 5. The latch 30 is pivoted between ribs 25 on the end of the spindle 5 and is formed with a hooked end 34, Fig. 7, which is spring-pressed by a plunger 38 into a recess c1, engaging behind the flange f to secure the tube X longitudinally on the spindle 5. The spindle is held in its winding position by a spring member 13, 14 adapted to snap into a notch 15. In doffing, the winding- spindle is turned into the position shown in Fig. 5 and the end 14 of the spring 13 engages the cam faces 33 on the latch 30 to release the cop-tube X. A new cop-tube is then slid along the spindle 5 and the spindle returned to the position shown in Fig. 3, the spring plunger 38 forcing the latch 30 outwardly and securing the finger 34 behind the flange f. The finger 34 is provided with a tooth 35 bevelled at 36 to prevent reverse rotation of the package after removal from driving contact with the roller 2, any rotation of the tube X opposite to the direction of winding, e.g. on entanglement of a broken end, causing the tooth 35 to enter one of the slots s. On restarting to wind, the tooth 35 will be cammed out of the slot by the bevel 36. The downward inclination of the spindle 5 when removed from the driving-roller 2, Fig. 2, assists the engagement of the tooth 35 in one of the slots s by movement of the tube X down the spindle under action of gravity.
