[Class 44.] A fastening for garments, bags, &c. consists of a number of open ring-like members c connected together at each side by chains &c. f so as to slide parallel to one another along ribs b on the edges a1, a11 to press these ribs resiliently together. One end ring cl may be fixed to the ribs b and the other end ring may be provided with an operating handle g and a spring clip for retaining it in position ; alternatively, both end rings may be provided with operating handles and the middle ring fixed, or the latter may be slidable to allow the opening of the article to be varied from two half-length openings to one full-length opening. To allow the edges a1, a11 to be completely separated, the rings may be taken off, the ends of the ribs being rounded to facilitate replacement. In another form, Fig. 4, one rib is divided into two parts u, u1, of which the lower part u 1 is mounted beside the other rib b on a plate v secured to the edge a1, and the upper part u secured to the other edge a11 is aligned with the lower part when the edge a11 is attached to the plate v by snap fasteners X, W. The other rib b may be divided at t and the flap v made detachable also from the other edge a1. At the junction of the two parts, the ribs may be stiffened and may be formed with a point on one part to engage with a depression in the other part. In the modification shown in Fig. 8, the rings and ribs are arranged inside a bag and an operating plate 13 is pivotally connected to a loop 6 secured to the end sliding member which consists of three rings soldered together. The operating plate 13 may be replaced by a loop of ribbon &c. An extension 14 may be provided on the bag into which the ribs extend, to receive the rings and allow of full opening of the bag.
