Improvements in the manufacture and production of polymerisation products of acetylene

In the manufacture of monovinylacetylene and other acetylene polymerization products by treating acetylene with acid aqueous cuprous salt solutions, use is made of cuprous salt solutions not containing a nitrogenous base or a salt thereof, but containing a salt or salts of an alkali or alkaline-earth metal, including magnesium, or of a metal of the third periodic group, including the rare-earth metals; the halides of the specified metals are preferred. The acidity of the solution may be adjusted by addition of an inorganic or organic acid, and the oxidation of the cuprous salt may be restrained by addition of copper or by the use of apparatus made wholly or in part of copper. Concentrated or dilute acetylene may be used. Examples are given in which monovinylacetylene and other acetylene polymerization products are obtained with the aid of aqueous cuprous chloride solutions containing (1) sodium chloride and copper powder, (2) sodium silicate, (3) lithium chloride and copper powder, (4) barium chloride and copper powder, (5) aluminium chloride and copper.
