An antiseptic mixture of chlor-secondary-butylphenols is made by condensing normal or secondary butyl alcohol with phenol by means of zinc chloride, and chlorinating with sulphuryl chloride that part of the reaction product which consists of mono-butylated phenols A mixture of chlorinated amylphenols is mentioned. In an example, normal-primary-butyl alcohol or secondary-butyl alcohol is heated with phenol and zinc chloride, and the monobutylated phenols are separated from the product by extraction with caustic soda and fractional distillation under reduced pressure. The monobutylated phenols are then chlorinated with sulphuryl chloride, and that part of the product which distils between 105--140 DEG C., under 12 mm., is the required mixture.ALSO:A mixture of para-chlor-ortho-secondary butylphenol and ortho-chlor-para-secondary-butylphenol is used as an antiseptic and germicide. It is made by condensing normal or secondary butyl alcohol with phenol by means of zinc chloride and chlorinating the product with sulphuryl chloride. A mixture of the corresponding amyl phenols is mentioned.
