A new and improved contrivance for spreading rows of cotton, twine or fine wire or the like over sown ground and over and around bushes and trees in order to provide a deterrent against birds
451,335. Seed and plant protectors ; treatment of growing plants; fencing. THOMSON, R. C., 23, Paulton Square, Chelsea, London. Nov. 3, 1934, Nos. 13359 and 20072. [Classes 6 (ii) and 45] A number of lines of cotton, twine, fine wire, &c. are spread simultaneously over the ground or over or around bushes or trees by means of apparatus comprising two sets of guides for the lines adapted to be secured directly or indirectly in the ground, means temporarily or permanently associated with one of the sets for manipulating it as a group, and means adapted to be secured directly or indirectly in the ground and associable in fixed relation to one or both of the sets during paying out of the lines for supporting one or more supplies of cotton &c. in such manner that it can readily be paid out. A single line is led to-and-fro one or more times between the sets of guides, the end of the line is secured, and one of the sets fixed in position, and then the other is moved away from it and secured. Fencing may be formed by placing the lines vertically above one another. Wires may be insulated and supplied with electric current for warming plants. The apparatus may consist of two frames 1, 2, Fig. 1, each consisting of a straight or arched cross member 5 and two legs 3, 4 for thrusting into the ground, guides 6 for the cotton and supports 9 for supply reels or cops 7 being provided. The cotton is carried from one reel 7 to-and-fro through the guides 6 on the two frames and then tied to the cotton on the other reel, one frame being fixed in the ground and the other then moved awav from it to the other end of a row of plants and finally fixed in the ground. The two frames may be identical, one support 9 being on each frame. One end of the cotton may be tied to one of the frames, and the supply or supplies carried by a separate member thrust into the ground. The guides 6 may each be bent to form a pair of opposite eyes 6a, 6b which are not quite closed in plan so that the cotton may be threaded in laterally. The supplies may be carried in containers slotted vertically and provided with a sleeve to fit over a support 9. The legs 3, 4 may be provided with eyes for carrying cotton across the frames 1. 2. In the frame shown in Fig. 5, guides 6 or screw eyes are carried by a wooden bar connected by screws to bends in the legs 3, 4, or secured by nuts on the legs. The spacing of the lines may be varied by inclining the frames. Another frame is in the form of a lazy-tongs and can be adjusted in length or closed up. Slightly open screw eyes. form the guides and the upper pivots of the lazy-tongs. The members of the lazy-tongs may be slotted to form guides. Instead of frames, series of single rods 13, Fig. 8, provided with eyes 12 may be employed, the upper ends of some of the rods forming spindles to receive the reels &c. A number of such rods may be temporarily attached to a plank for spreading the lines. Intermediate supports for the lines of cotton may consist of corrugated or helical wires provided with legs. According to the first Provisional Specification, humps or pegs may be used instead of guide eyes, the frames may be strutted or stayed, and a number of guide frames may be moved together by means of a bar provided with hooks.
