[Class 36] A suspension or strain insulator, more particularly of the pin-and-cap type, comprises an insulator body consisting of upstanding boss and rim portions 1, 2 which are spaced apart to form a deep annular oil channel 3. To protect the oil from contamination a downwardly directed metal shield 11 may be arranged over the insulator, the edge of the shield extending below the preferably bevelled edge 12 of the rim portion. When the insulators are used in chain form a metal shield may be arranged over each insulator, or the insulators may each be formed with a skirt which is adapted to protect the oil trough of the adjacent lower insulator in the chain, the uppermost insulator being protected by a metal shield.
