[Class 135] [Also in Groups XXIII, XXXV, and XL] In apparatus for producing ground and polished glass strip wherein glass 1 from a tank 2 is rolled at 3, passes on a roller bed 5 through a lehr 6, and thence is passed by rollers 9 between grinding and polishing tools 7, 8 operating on both faces of the glass, means are provided for indicating the position of the centre line of the strip at or near the grinding apparatus, when the strip is of variable width, and means also are provided, dependent on the indications, for bringing approximately together the centre line of the strip and the centres of the tools. The indicating means may take the form of a V-groove 11 rolled in the plastic strip by a roller 10 or one of the rollers 3, and the strip is moved to keep it central, by rollers 24 engaging opposite edges of the strip and each actuated by a piston in a cylinder 22 to which fluid or steam is supplied by a pipe 26 from a valve box 20. The operating arm 19 of the valve box is actuated by movement of a roller 12 engaging the groove 11 at a point in or near the grinding apparatus, and carried by the arm 13 of a lever pivoted at 14 to a, lever 15 pivoted at 16, the roller being held in the groove by a spring 21 and the arm 17 of the first lever engaging the arm 19. In a modification, instead of the groove 11, a band or bands 27 of opaque paint &c. may be applied to the strip, and each serving normally to shield a light-sensitive cell 28 from a light source 29, but, when the band moves to one side, allowing the light to fall on the cell, and thereby, through relays 30, 31 to operate a solenoid 33 to move the valve arm 19. In a further modification, the edges of the strip are each engaged by a roller carried by a pivoted arm, the arms being connected respectively to the ends of a lever pivoted at its centre to a lever engaging the valve arm 19 ; variations of width only of the strip then cause no movement thereof, whereas movements of the centre line cause actuation of the valve. The indicating &c. means described above may be used in connection with the apparatus described in Specification 497,088, [Group XXIII], instead of the feeler therein described to move the grinding &c. tools, instead of the strip, to bring together the centre line of the strip and the centres of the tools.
